Laser Welding Certificate

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers two laser welding certification programs, providing professionals with the skills necessary to successfully implement the laser welding process. The laser welding certificates distinguish individuals who have received formal training and satisfactorily completed a written examination that covers laser welding equipment, process procedures, and validation. The knowledge and experience demonstrated through the completion of the certification requirements are critical for success in implementing the laser welding process.

Two Certificate Options Available

The UW-Madison Laser Welding Certificate offers individuals two opportunities to gain marketable recognition for their laser welding knowledge and expertise. Each certificate represents the individual's technical background and level of responsibility. The certificates are:

LWPSM - Accredited Laser Welding Professional

This certification acknowledges an applicant who is the primary technical professional involved in the design, engineering, and/or management of laser welding parts, assemblies, or operations. The LWPSM requires the applicant to hold a baccalaureate degree.

LWTSPSM - Accredited Laser Welding Process Technical Support Provider

This certification acknowledges an applicant who is the primary technical professional involved in the design, engineering, and/or management of laser welding parts, assemblies, or operations. The LWPSM requires the applicant to hold a baccalaureate degree.

By completing these rigorous, independently evaluated certificates at UW-Madison, professionals will be capable of:

  • Writing equipment and process procedures
  • Writing technical data sheets
  • Performing calculations and diagnostics to confirm correct operation of the equipment and the correct performance of the laser process
  • Validating the laser and process per ISO, FDA and/or AWS standards/guidelines.

Distinction in the Marketplace

Available only at UW-Madison, Laser Welding Certifications offer a unique opportunity for individuals in the laser welding field to gain recognition and focus on laser welding equipment and process validation, combine to create an opportunity for individuals to distinguish their capabilities.

Although there are several guidelines on laser welding practice, the UW-Madison certifications incorporate the guidelines of ISO, FDA, AWS to provide the "best practice" standards for the industry.

Both certificates require:

  • Completion of the UW-Madison course, Laser Welding: Equipment and Process Validation
  • Completion of the UW-Madison course, Laser Beam Diagnostics
  • Successful completion of the UW-Madison Laser Welding Certification Examination (grade of 80 or better). The two courses must be completed before taking the exam.
